What's better than Waterpik®?
The HYDROFLOSS! The difference is "magnetohydrodynamics" A magnet in the handle affects a change in the water, releasing free electrons that interrupt the attatchment of bacteria to the teeth. You can learn more about it in the youtube video below.
My experience with the Hydrofloss®
I had a patient in 1993 with cerebral palsey who couldn't hold floss. His lower front teeth were very slanted toward his tongue. I couldn't get all the tartar off because access was impossible. I suggested the hydrofloss although I hadn't any personal experience with it myself. He got one online and when I saw him 3 months later I was shocked. The tartar had fallen off his teeth!
Another patient, more recently, had been really trying to have good home care, but it just wasn't working. I showed her the S.M.I.L.E. System for Brushing® and advised the hydrofloss. She brought in a run-of-the-mill irrigator for my approval and instruction and said, "This was cheaper." I told her, "You are wasting your money and time. I guarantee you will be disappointed and will have to buy the correct one later, and that's not saving money in the end." She listened to my advise and returned the store brand item. She has several old plastic fillings on the face of most of her front teeth. Her natural teeth were not bleached and like all of us, her smile wasn't as white as is used to be. The edges of them had picked up lipstick and I couldn't get it off when I cleaned her teeth. She began using the hydrofloss and about a month after I had cleaned her teeth. When she came in for her next appointment I did a double-take. Her teeth were whiter! I've not seen that before! Plus, all the lipstick stain was gone. She was so pleased, she bought a second one for her summer home in Michigan.

This is a great question that has been posed by even college professors. Other irrigators are cheaper. Can't I just get one of those?
Depends on if you want it to just rinse away debris, or to actually decrease tartar and plaque accumulation and improve gum health. If you have braces, and are 13 years old, any irrigator will do. If you have gum disease--I would invest in something that actually works to tackle the source of the problem--namely, the hydrofloss.
